Today I analysed Young Adult Dystopian novel blurbs and I also researched how to write blurbs for book covers.

I noticed that in YA dystopian novels, the blurbs tend to include the age of the main charcaters, for example in the Harper Collin's Divergent (written by Veronica Roth) blurb it starts with the sentence "Sixteen-year-old Tris is forced to make a terrible choice'. This is possibly to attract the target audience quicker and for the readers to feel a connection with the protagonist, making them more likely to read the book.

Furthermore, in most dystopian fiction, the main conflict is introduced and the current state of the dystopian world is described allowing the soon-to-be-readers to picture a glimpse of this new world and create intrigue. This also helps the readers to know what genre the book is.

Blurbs also contain quotes of positive reviews from well-known and trusted critics such as companies like the New York Times or other best-selling/famous authors. I will therefore look into reviews of my chosen books online and quote them to use as part of my blurb.

Some blurbs contain the professional status of the author. I think that this will be very useful to invlude in my book cover as the novels that I chose and their authors are well known within the dystopian genre.

Lastly, blurbs tend to be written in 250 characters, give or take to keep it "short and punchy" (blurb.co.uk)

Books that I analysed:

The 5th Wave by Rick Yancey (Penguin)

Divergent by Veronica Roth (Harper Collins)

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins (Scholastic)
